Options for Obtaining a Criminal Record Check:

Gananoque Police Service is pleased to partner with myBackCheck.com to provide an
online method to obtain criminal record checks. While a record check can still be obtained
by visiting the Emergency Services Building at 340 Herbert Street, we believe you will find
the online service faster and more convenient.

The online check is performed by the Gananoque Police Service, but rather than wait 10
days for a paper response, myBackCheck.com sends the results to you electronically,
normally within one to three business days.  These can be shared by you electronically.

Online myBackCheck.com service is secure, safe, fast and easy:

•        Step 1 - set up an account.
•        Step 2 - order a criminal record check.
•        Step 3 - results are provided to your account
•        Step 4 - you can then electronically share the criminal record check with the
organization requesting the check by selecting their name from a drop-down list (much like
adding a bill to pay through your online bank account).

Criminal Record Check
A criminal record check is a name-based search of the national repository of criminal
convictions.

Time Frame - criminal record checks are typically processed within three
business days online and 10 business days in-person.

Vulnerable Sector Check
A vulnerable sector check is a special type of criminal record check required for situations
where the applicant will be in a position of trust or authority over children, the elderly, the
disabled, or another vulnerable group. A vulnerable sector check involves a name-based
search of the national repository of criminal convictions, a search of locally held convictions
at the Gananoque Police Service and a query of the pardoned sex-offender database.

As a result of a directive issued by the Public Safety Minister, the RCMP recently made
enhancements to the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) system to ensure that an
unreported name change would not allow a pardoned sexual offender to avoid being
identified through a vulnerable sector query. In some cases applicants may be required to
submit their fingerprints if there is a possible match based on either name or a combination
of gender and date of birth to a pardoned sex offender record. Applicants with a potential
match will be notified by the Gananoque Police Service and requested to attend the
Gananoque Police Service Headquarters to have their prints taken. There is no additional
charge for the taking of fingerprints for volunteer organizations, however, there is a $25
fee collected by the Gananoque Police on begalf of the RCMP and forwarded to the
Receiver General for all non-volunteer fingerprint submissions.

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cr-cj/vulner/index-eng.htm for more information on the
changes.

Time Frame - You should allow a minimum of two weeks for processing of a vulnerable
sector check.
