Introduction

The Gananoque Police Service is a small town police service, which has served the Town of Gananoque since around 1863. GPS has grown with the Town to its' current size of 14 uniformed officers. The Service has moved around in the Town several times throughout its history; and has been in its' current location since 2004. Prior to 2004 the Gananoque Police and Fire Services spent approximately 40 years located in an old Armouries building at 175 South Street, the building currently occupied by the Firehall Theatre. In 2004 the new Gananoque Emergency Services building was built at 340 Herbert Street, and both the Police and Fire Departments were relocated there.The Service is one of the few remaining small Town Police Services left in Ontario, and one of the last to still have its own Communications Centre.

Our Jurisdiction

The Jurisdiction of the Gananoque Police Service extends mainly to the Town Gates. The west boundaries include a landscaping business and two residences just past the west gates, the north boundary extends to the last two businesses before reaching the 401 which are Runnings Auto and Home Hardware, and the eastern boundary stops at the east gates. The Ontario Provincial Police patrol everything beyond the three gates of Gananoque as well as the 401 and all waterways. The western boundary of the Ontario Provincial Police is at Deer Ridge Road, the county line. West of Deer Ridge Road is Kingston Police jurisdiction. Deer Ridge Drive sits on the boundary line between Leeds and Grenville and Frontenac Counties.

Staff

The Gananoque Police Service currently has a Chief of Police, Chief Scott Gee, Four Sergeants, and nine Police Constables. The Police Service employs an Administrative Assistant, three Special Constables, three Auxilliary Officers and eight Police/Fire Communicators (five full-time, three part-time). The Gananoque Police Service also employs several casual employees to fill the duties of Cell Monitor, and Background Check Clerks.
High School students attend the Police Service each year through the school's Co-Op Program to earn credits while learning about policing. Every summer GPS also employs four High School students through the Youth Policing Initiative Program.

Emergency Services Building

Built in 2004, the Gananoque Emergency Services Building is home to both the Gananoque Police Service and the Gananoque Fire Department. The building holds a Main Boardroom which is used once a month for Town Council meetings and Police Services Board meetings. The Building also has office space which is used weekly by other services. These services include:

• Michael Barrett MP Representative - Monday mornings: 9:00am to 11:00am
• Steve Clark MPP Representative - Friday afternoons: 1:00pm to 3:00pm
• Adult Probation - Monday to Thursday, most of the day
• Youth Probation - By appointment only
• VCARS (Victim Crisis Assistance and Referral Service) - Wednesday afternoons
